PROJECT Morocco

Anti-Atlas Mountains

Description

In 2021, Global Digital Heritage and Global Heritage Fund partnered to document the ancient fortified granaries of the Berber people in Anti-Atlas Mountains region of Morocco. These ancient collective granaries were used by the Berber tribes of the Amazigh communities to safely store valuables like wheat, dates, and spices, as well as jewels, silver, and carpets and is considered one of the oldest local banking systems.

GDH was also digitized the Adrar Zarzam Adai rock art site, where numerous petroglyphs have been located, many of them with figures of animals that have already disappeared in that area.
