Global Digital Heritage has launched an ambitious 3D digitization project of the more than 1000 fragments of the Forma Urbis Marmorea, the immense marble map of ancient Rome now on display in the new Museo della Forma Urbis.
This project is the result of a new collaboration with the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and the Museo della Forma Urbis and its goal is to produce the most accurate and complete digital documentation ever made of this extraordinary roman monument.
Our team, made up of four digital photogrammetric documentation specialists (from Italy, Portugal and Spain), has already worked on over 600 fragments of the map in the first week of work, generating ultra-high-quality 3D models that will enhance future research.
This effort will open up new possibilities for studying and understanding one of the most fascinating maps of the ancient world.
And this is just the beginning… Much more to come soon!
