Catacombs of San Gennaro, Naples, Italy. They were used for burials from the 2nd C. AD to the Middle Ages. We estimate 5,313.18 sq. m. excavated floor area based on scans, and another 1000+ square meters of tombs and chambers. Unexcavated areas are extensive. Scanning mostly in complete darkness.
1,115 FARO and Z&F scans were aligned in FARO SCENE, individually exported in e57 format, and imported into Reality Capture to align and mesh. Model cleaning was done in Geomagic Wrap and decimation/retopo was done Instant Meshes and Zbrush. UV unwrap/texturing was done Reality Capture and normal map was rendered in XNormal.
The result of a joint project of GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale”, and the Administration of the Catacombe di Napoli.
