The Escoural Cave is one of the most iconic monuments in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, being widely recognized for the presence of Paleolithic rock art (paintings and engravings). This aspect of its occupation inspired more than five decades of research that, in turn, unveiled 50 millennia of history. Today the investigation continues, in addition to the recent archaeological excavation in the fortified settlement above the Cave, with the application of new technologies to enhance its conservation and interpretation. In particular, heritage virtualization techniques such as 3D photogrammetric and laser scanning and pigment enhancement software have been applied to better translate knowledge to the general public and discover any other secrets that the cave may still keep.
