The cistern (aljibe) of the castle of Los Vélez in Mula (Murcia) was designed and built to guarantee the water supply to the defenders of the keep in case of a siege. The exterior is protected by solid stone walls built directly on the natural bedrock. The cistern has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a barrel vault. Inside it preserves the red plaster (almagra) that served both to waterproof the space and to improve water conservation.
