Iron ferrule. Used to finish off the lower part of the spear, it had multiple uses: It allows the warrior who fights with a wielded spear to have a second spearhead if the shaft breaks during combat; a sharp ferrule allows the weapon to be driven into the ground when not in use, thus preventing the wooden shaft from splintering, allowing it to finish off fallen enemies (Quesada Sanz, 1997: 429-431).
