The Castle of Alhama (Spain), is a fortress built in the Islamic period in the late 11th century. The southern end of the castle hill was remodeled in the feudal period. It has two walled enclosures named the Lower and the Upper areas. Access is via a path carved into the rock which leads to the first entrance which was defended by a tower and loopholes. To supply water to the soldiers and the population in the event of a siege, 3 cisterns were built with a capacity of approximately 30,000 liters each. In the Middle Ages this cistern was covered with a vault that kept the water fresh and clean.
