Example of an Islamic medieval latrine preserved in Alhama de Murcia
(Murcia, Spain). The medieval cities of Al-Andalus developed extensive
regulations aimed at improving hygiene and thus preventing disease.
Little by little, the existence of latrines inside the Islamic houses
became general, something very rare in Christian medieval Europe.
Islamic fortresses also had latrines. These latrines dumped the waste
into the sewerage network, into blind wells, or directly outside the
walls.
