Founded by voivode Petru Cercel (1583–1585), the church was built in 1584. Is dedicated to the
Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was built according to the model of the church of the Metropolia of
Târgovişte, with a Greek cross plan and was the largest church in Wallachia (14×30 m).
The church is the depository of the largest gallery of portraits of Wallachian voivodes. A
characteristic of this church is the balcony, of Byzantine inspiration, built on the west side of the
nave and supported by arches and vaults, which descend on two interior pillars and on a stone
colonnade. Through the belfry, connected to the gallery suspended from the outside, the voivode
could pass directly from the adjoining noble houses into the church.
