After 1431, the city of Târgovişte is the only capital of Wallachia. The voivode Vlad Dracul and his son, Vlad Ţepeş known as Dracula, initiated construction works, transforming the original courtyard. Thus, a tower of impressive dimensions appears, later known as the Chindiei Tower. Tower functions evolved from a bell tower in the 1st half of the 15th century, to a watchtower, refuge and defence in the 15th-16th centuries, then a clock tower in the 17th century, from where it derives its current name, “chindie” meaning sunset. Today, the Chindiei Tower is the result of the restoration from the middle 19th century. Between 1847 and 1852, at the initiative of Prince Gheorghe Bibescu, the Chindiei Tower was repaired and transformed.
